Frequently Asked Questions
Nilgiri Marten Spices is a single-origin spice brand based in Bengaluru, India, that sources GI-tagged and traceable spices directly from farming communities across the Western Ghats, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and other biodiversity hotspots in India. Every product is tied to a specific region, tribe, and harvest, with no blending or middlemen. The brand operates across D2C (website and Amazon India), domestic B2B wholesale, and international export channels. FSSAI License 11322012000325.
Single-origin means a spice comes from one specific region, and often one specific community of farmers, rather than being blended from multiple sources. Most commercial spices are blended across origins to hit a price point, which dilutes the flavor and makes the supply chain impossible to trace. Single-origin guarantees traceability, freshness, and the terroir (soil, climate, altitude) of a defined place. It is the same concept applied to coffee and chocolate, now applied to spices.
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a legal certification granted by the Government of India that identifies a product as originating from a specific geographical location, where the quality or characteristics are attributable to that origin. GI-tagged spices like Tellicherry Pepper, Idukki Cardamom (GI #72), Lakadong Turmeric (GI #336), Kanniyakumari Cloves (GI #406), and Guntur Sannam Chilli (GI #143) meet strict origin and quality standards. Nilgiri Marten sources and sells only authentic, verifiable GI-tagged spices from their registered regions.
Lakadong Turmeric is grown exclusively in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, primarily by the Pnar community, and carries GI Tag #336. It contains 7 to 12% curcumin, nearly 3x the 2 to 3% found in regular commercial turmeric. The high rainfall, mineral-rich soil, and traditional cultivation practices of the region produce this unusually high active-compound concentration. It has a deep orange-red color, earthy-musky flavor, and is the most potent turmeric variety in the world.
Tellicherry is the highest grade of black pepper (Piper nigrum), grown on India's Malabar Coast in Kerala. Only peppercorns measuring 4.25mm or larger qualify as Tellicherry, representing roughly 10% of the Malabar pepper crop. The extended ripening on the vine concentrates piperine and develops complex citrus, floral, and woody undertones. TGSEB (Tellicherry Garbled Special Extra Bold), at 4.75mm or larger, is the rarest sub-grade at approximately 1% of the annual harvest. It falls under the Malabar Pepper GI tag.
Our spices are not certified organic, but they are grown using traditional, chemical-free farming practices by the communities we source from. Many of our spices are wild-harvested (like Meghalaya Cassia Cinnamon) or grown under tribal stewardship (like Ing Makhir ginger from Mulieh village), where synthetic inputs have never been part of the practice. We prioritize single-origin traceability and verifiable sourcing over certification labels, and can provide lab reports on request.
We work directly with farming communities and farmer producer organizations (FPOs) across Kerala's Western Ghats, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and other single-origin regions. There are no middlemen or commodity traders involved. Our founder visits sourcing regions personally, which allows us to verify quality, pay fair prices, and maintain continuity with the same families and cooperatives across harvests.
Yes, Nilgiri Marten ships worldwide. For retail orders, international shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on destination and weight. For bulk B2B and export orders (wholesale pricing, FOB or CIF terms), contact aswinpk@nilgirimarten.com or WhatsApp +91 97783 07321. We hold MFDS Supplier Code IN000005724 for Korea and can provide phytosanitary certificates, Certificate of Origin, and lab testing for export documentation.
Every spice is packed close to harvest, usually within weeks. We never warehouse stock for months like commodity brands do. Whole spices (peppercorns, cardamom pods, nutmeg, cloves) retain their essential oils for 2 to 3 years when stored correctly. Ground spices retain their full potency for 6 to 12 months. Our small-batch packaging means you get the freshest possible product from each harvest cycle.
If any product arrives damaged, expired, or different from your order, please return it to the delivery person with a note on the delivery challan, or contact us through the website with your order number and delivery date within 48 hours of receipt. To be eligible for a refund or exchange, returned items must be unopened and in saleable condition.
