Lakadong Turmeric: The Golden Spice of Meghalaya
West Jaintia Hills Cluster Gap Assessment & Production Report
Lakadong Turmeric is globally renowned for its exceptional quality, boasting a Curcumin content of over 7%, compared to the global average of 2-3%. Grown in the pristine hills of the West Jaintia district in Meghalaya, this "Golden Spice" is a powerhouse of immunity and flavor.
Production Snapshot: The West Jaintia Hills Cluster
The cluster is dominated by the Laskein Block, which contributes approximately 87% of the total regional production.
- Total Cultivation Area: 1,898 Hectares
- Annual Production: ~11,800 Metric Tons
- Farmer Base: Over 13,000 farmers involved
- Year-over-Year Growth: 22.97% (2020-21)
Critical Value Chain Gaps
Despite the high demand for Lakadong Turmeric, the cluster faces significant challenges in "Post-Harvest Management." Currently, only 30% of the produce is processed locally into powder.
1. Infrastructure Bottlenecks
There is a critical shortage of accredited testing laboratories and integrated pack houses, leading to pest infestation (white grub).
2. Market Linkage
The supply chain is currently dominated by local middlemen, limiting price realization for farmers.
Government Interventions & The Road Ahead
The Government of Meghalaya has proposed a comprehensive investment plan totaling ₹46.8 Crores.
- Integrated Hubs: Establishment of 4 Integrated Pack Houses and 8 Collection Centers.
- Mechanization: Introduction of solar hybrid dehydrators.
- Capacity Building: Training 2,000+ farmers on GAP.
